Pete Tarrier, Justin McIsaac and I reveal our Players and coaches of the year in all three divisions of New Hampshire high school football.
Before we get to our awards we want to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Eric Fariweather. Our thoughts & prayers are with you after this week's tragedy..
Division I Player of the Year:
Dave Haley
1, Eric Fairweather of Londonderry
2. Mike Vailas of Bedford
3. TJ Urbanik of Pinkerton Academy
Comment: Fairweather ran for 18 touchdowns and threw for 10 more. He was the critical piece to the second best offense in the Division I and led maybe even the second best team in the state.
Pete Tarrier
1. Eric Fairweather-Londonderry No one meant more to their teams' offensive attack more than the shifty and explosive senior.
2. TJ Urbanik-Pinkerton
Astros had their closest call all year on a night Urbanik was sidelined most of the game with an injury.
3. Mike Vailas-Bedford It's a shame we didn't get to see his talents on display at UNH. A threat to score anytime he touched it.
Justin McIsaac
1. TJ Urbanik (Pinkerton) – Playoff performance factors in here, 247 yards in the D1 title game don’t lie.
2. Connor DiCesare (Portsmouth)
3. Eric Fairweather (Londonderry)
Division II Player of the Year
Dave Haley
1. Will Pollard of Kennett
2. Brendan McInnis of Windham
3. Stephen Hedberg of St. Thomas
Comment: When you have three elite quarterbacks, each deserving of the honor, it comes down to what team would be worse off if you took that player off the team. I feel like St. Thomas and Windham have the pieces to make a limited run without their two star quarterbacks. Kennett would have struggled offensively without Pollard and so he is the pick.
If I had one game to win? I’d choose McInnis..
Pete Tarrier
1. Stephen Hedberg-St Thomas Watching him command that faced-paced offense was a treat. And he's only a junior!
2. Will Pollard-Kennett
Another junior who really came into his own this year. A dual threat that has a big arm and explosive running ability.
3. Brendan McInnis-Windham The true field general and leader of an undefeated Championship team. Will excel at the next level.
Justin McIsaac
1. Stephen Hedberg (Saint Thomas) 35 TD passes , general of what’s probably the most complex offense in NH, a lot of responsibility falls on the QB in that STA offense.
2. Brendan McInnis (Windham)
3. Will Pollard (Kennett)
Division III Player of the Year
Dave Haley
1. Elyjah Dejoie of Somersworth
2. Kyle Gaudet of Gilford
3. Matt Ehrenberg of Bow
Comment: You have no idea how badly I wanted to give this award to the entire Bow defense…they gave up 25 points in their first 9 games…think about that.
Pete Tarrier
1. Elyjah Dejoie-Somersworth
Opposing teams knew he was getting the ball...and they still couldn't stop him.
2. Matt Ehrenberg-Bow
Similar to Urbanik and Pinkerton, if Bow hadn't blown so many teams out Ehrenberg would have had much more gaudy numbers.
3. Brendan Johnson-Bishop Brady
His 31 passing touchdowns was a state record for a whole week until Hedberg tied and then moved past him.
Justin McIsaac
1. Elyjah Dejoie (Somersworth) Dejoie ran for 2,132 yards and a billion TD’s in 9 games when everyone in the building knew he would be running the ball off right tackle 85% of the time Somersworth had the ball. Still couldn’t stop him. Also played really good D at Safety.
2. Brendan Johnson (Bishop Brady)
3. Kevin Moreau (Campbell)
Division I Coach of the Year:
Dave Haley
1. Jim Lauzon of Londonderry
2. Brian O’Reilly of Pinkerton
3. Peter Colcord of Manchester Memorial
Comment: Londonderry lost only two games under their first year head coach and it was to the team that just won the championship 37-0. Say what you want about the Salem win but his kids were ready for any scenario…that’s good coaching.
Pete Tarrier
1. Jimmy Lauzon-Londonderry Sealed the award on Halloween night when he sent his kicker out on 3rd down against Salem.
Justin McIsaac
1. Brian O’Reilly of Pinkerton-undefeated…enough said.
2. Kurt Hines of Bedford
3. Peter Colcord of Manchester Memorial
Division II Coach of the Year
Dave Haley
1. Zach Mathews of Kearsarge Regional
2. Jon Welch of Sanborn
3. Chris Sanborn of Plymouth Regional
Comment: No one saw Kearsarge coming and Mathews had his team ready to win pivotal season ending games against Lebanon and at Laconia.
Pete Tarrier
1. Bill Raycraft-Windham His team ran the table and didn't have any team come within single digits along the way.
Justin McIsaac
1. Bill Raycraft, Windham : Wire to wire in D2, his kids were well coached enough to not panic the only time they faced a real test.
2. Eric Cumba STA
3. Vaughn Beckwith Kennett
Division III Coach of the Year
Dave Haley
1. Greg Gush of Campbell
2. Shawn Garrett of Gilford
3. Larry McElreavy of Newport
Comment: This one feels like a no-brainer…
Pete Tarrier
1. Greg Gush of Campbell The playoff win over Bow shocked the entire state. Capping it off with a Championship was a great follow up.
Justin McIsaac
1. Greg Gush, Campbell - rebound from a 1-2 start, upset of the year, state title
2 Larry McElreavy, Newport
3 Dan Hodsdon Somersworth
