The Season Finale of Justin McIsaac's Top 10 on anything...and everything..brougth to you by The Auburn Pitts
2014-11-24
As we all know, Power Polls are silly- some of the voters don’t even watch any games! But people love lists, which is why Buzzfeed is a thing, so here’s Justin McIsaac’s TOP TEN!
10. RIGHT WHERE WE THOUGHT THEY’D BE
Pinkerton is your D1 State Champs, to the surprise of few…. We got to see them in the Queen City Jamboree, and they looked very stout in August. A lot can happen from August to November, but one thing that didn’t happen was Pinkerton taking an L. 12-0, and a 12th State title for the Astros is an amazing accomplishment.
9. "OH BOY"
If you haven’t watched the highlights of the D3 Title game here on NHSportspage.com, my personal recommendation is to head to the 16 minute mark and watch as Dave Haley sets me up for a moment that will live in Youtube infamy. Campbell’s entire team rushes the interview, and I froze like a drunk guy in Pamplona for the first time.
8. GREG GUSH HAS TO BUY A BANNER
Speaking of Campbell, how ‘bout them Cougars?!?! Rematches in every playoff game, avenging their only two losses of the regular season (Somersworth and Bow), going TO BOW and winning decisively over the team everyone had already given the trophy to… that’s a good year. It’s the first title for Campbell in football, to match the one the Cougars took home in Baseball back in June.
7. EVERYONE HURRY UP AND WAIT
I thought UNH did a wonderful job hosting the NHIAA finals, and it was a great atmosphere for the players, and the fans (the media, however, is looking forward to the Press Box renovation. I think I found a few buttons Jock MacKenzie lost back in the day). But the one problem you had if you were a D1 fan was the traffic. From high above the field, you could see the traffic backed up all the way on to Route 4. Aside from making 155a 3 lanes, there’s not much that can be done about the traffic. GET THERE EARLY NEXT TIME, IT’S THE STATE TITLE GAME!
6. RUNNING OVER THE BULLDOGS
Yes, I already talked about Pinkerton, but you have to stand in awe of the way the Astros made it happen… you’re never going to see Pinkerton throw the ball 30 times, but even I didn’t think Pinkerton would have AS MUCH success as they did running the ball against Bedford. 345 rushing yards, with TJ Urbanik grabbing 241 of those made it happen.
5. BRIDESMAIDS AGAIN
Bedford hasn’t been a high school very long, but they’ve already had tremendous success in athletics. This is the 3rd different division they’ve been to the title game in football, but they juuuuuuuussssssssst haven’t gotten over the hump yet. It’s going to be sooner rather than later for Kurt Hines and his crew, who have a great program with about 734 kids playing in it.
4. LAYING THE LUMBER
Newport came up a little short in the D3 Title Game to Campbell, but they certainly left their mark- quite literally. Devastating hits (clean hits, for the record) to Campbell WR’s led to several stoppages in the game. Luckily everyone seemed to be ok, but man alive. Matt Boone in particular seemed to be a human missile.
3. ODELL BECKHAM JR IS NOT A HUMAN BEING
You’ve seen every gif, every video, every photoshop, every everything there is to see from last night’s amazing grab. It’s the greatest catch in the history of football if you ask me, and, by clicking on this column, you did ask me.
2. WELL, IT WAS ALMOST THE PLAY OF THE GAME
In the STA – Windham instant classic, there was a play that, if STA had hung on to win, might’ve been the sneaky play of the game. STA kicker/punter Nick Guilfuchi had the snap on a punt sail over his head. Guilfuchi had the awareness to pick up the ball at his own 15, and instead of trying to kick with a couple of Jaguars bearing down on him, threw an incomplete pass that saved the Saints about 30 yards of field position. Great coaching, and great awareness.
1. SERIOUSLY, GAME OF THE YEAR!
The D2 Final was the best game of the year. Wild momentum swings, trick plays, goal line stands, points all over the place, fake punts, you name it, and this game had it. Saint Thomas was dead to rights after getting down 21-0. Windham looked just as dead when Liam Middleton caught a tipped pass and took it to the house to give STA the lead. STA’s goal line stand gave them a huge lift- until Windham got a safety two plays later.
A great QB duel that saw 9 total TD passes, and a very young state record get broken (congrats to Stephen Hedberg on breaking Brendan Johnson’s record), and in the end it was Windham on top in a barn burner. Brendan McInnis was as good as advertised, and the Jags will get to hang their first football banner. Don’t be surprised if it’s a rematch in 2015 between these two teams, either.
ALSO RECIVING VOTES: Kevin Gould continued his Baby-Gronk run, Seriously that pressbox needs to be upgraded, Everyone’s favorite press-release regurgitation troll going back under the bridge for 9 months, Chuck Lenehan sighting at UNH, Kurtis Jolicoeur running dudes over, Me getting the D2 Final score right… but the teams wrong
